AN AUDIO-VISUAL website created for lovers of William Shakespeare's
poetry and of new flute music. In this original and imaginative
version, every one of the 154 Sonnets is recited directly into camera
in a clear and easy to understand English. The improvisations try to
capture something of the tuneful, very rhythmic, occasionally rustic
"playhouse feeling" of the period, without losing the intimacy of the
Poet's "lark ascending" and "black dog" moments. The mellow flute
playing is remarkable for its fresh inventiveness and beautiful
sonority. In what is believed to be the first website of its kind, it
gives a unique insight into the development of our language as well as
the art of musical improvising. Here we find Shakespeare' s views on
Time and on Death (Sonnet 64) on Love--platonic (Sonnet 116) and erotic
(Sonnet 151) --not forgetting his ideas on natural selection (Sonnet
11), Astrology (Sonnet 14), thought-travel (Sonnet 44) and preventive
Medicine (Sonnet 118) . The many legal allusions show he was well
versed in the workings of the Law (Sonnets 46 and 134) and his
acquaintance with Music and its powers is self-evident (Sonnets 8 and
128). Leonardo first imagined the helicopter, but is this the first
mention of "car" in the English language.. (Sonnet 7) ?
